We love visiting Ensenada, a charming port town on Mexico’s western coast that many West Coast cruises stop at. The town is easy to explore on foot with plenty of shops, restaurants, and vibrant street markets offering unique finds. The relaxed atmosphere and scenic views make every visit special.
Onboard the Firenze, an Italian-styled ship that sails from Long Beach, we enjoy quiet moments during port days. The peaceful areas, friendly crew, and chance to spot sea lions nearby add to the experience, making it a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. The ship’s art, dining spaces, and entertainment offer plenty to enjoy whether we’re on or off the ship.
Exploring Ensenada’s Bustling Harbor
Strolling Into the Heart of Town
We love taking the short 15-20 minute walk from the port into Ensenada’s center. The town feels welcoming, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and great spots for photos along the way. The weather is often perfect for a peaceful stroll, with breezes that keep you comfortable as you explore.
Exploring Local Markets and Boutiques
In the big plaza nearby, there’s usually a lively market full of interesting stalls. We enjoy walking around to see the fresh items and unique crafts offered by local vendors. Although some of the small shops near the port have been closed since the pandemic, the markets still bring that authentic Ensenada vibe we love.
Finding Special Mexican Treasures
When shopping, we keep an eye out for vanilla and tequila, must-have Mexican products we always bring home. Sweatshirts and other souvenirs are also popular around here. It’s fun to hunt for these items, especially when each day brings new finds in the market and the shops by the waterfront.
Aboard the Firenze: Ship Features
Background and Modern Upgrades
The Firenze started life as the Costa Firenze and joined Carnival’s fleet in 2024, keeping the Italian styling it was built with — including the Michelangelo Dining Room and its replica of Michelangelo’s David. It sails from Long Beach and visits ports like Ensenada, a charming town just a short walk from the pier. The ship pairs that Italian design with the familiar Carnival touches to enhance our experience.
Friendly Crew and Service
Every crew member we meet is cheerful and eager to help, which makes spending time on board even better. Their hospitality stands out and adds a warm touch to our visits. Whether it’s a quick chat or service, the staff’s attitude makes the ship feel welcoming.
Relaxing Pool Vibes During Shore Visits
On port days, such as when docked at Ensenada, the pool area is wonderfully calm and nearly empty since many passengers explore ashore. The retractable dome opens to reveal a peaceful, sunny space, perfect for lounging. We find plenty of seating, enjoy snacks or drinks, and sometimes catch something playing on the big screen nearby. Just remember sunscreen and a hat!
Hidden Gems Onboard
Private Terrace Lounge for Suite Guests
We love spending time on the exclusive terrace patio reserved just for suite guests. It’s a peaceful spot located at the back of the ship, perfect for sitting quietly and enjoying the view. On port days, it’s usually pretty empty, making it our go-to for relaxation.
Cozy Spots and Beautiful Vistas
Finding a quiet place to relax on the ship is easy. Whether it’s a lounge chair near the pool or inside under the retractable dome, the calm atmosphere lets us unwind while taking in the scenic ocean views. The fresh breeze and comfortable seating make it a perfect hideaway.
Outdoor Big Screen Fun
We often gather by the big screen near the pool to catch shows or movies. On port days, when fewer people are around, it’s great to grab a seat, enjoy a snack or drink, and watch entertainment outdoors without the usual crowd.
Unforgettable Moments with Wildlife
Observing the Sea Lions Up Close
One of our favorite parts of the day in Ensenada is spotting the sea lions. Though sometimes they might be hard to see, we usually hear their lively noises nearby. They often gather on little buoys and rocks close to the ship, creating a memorable wildlife experience.
Ideal Spots for Wildlife Watching
The back of the ship is our go-to place for relaxing and watching the sea lions. On port days, this area is usually quiet and comfortable, perfect for sitting and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere while scanning the water and nearby rocks for animal activity.
Dining Experiences and Spaces
Atmosphere of the Michelangelo Dining Area
We really enjoy the Michelangelo dining room, which serves as the main spot for those with anytime dining. The room feels open and bright, never cramped. A statue of David adds a classy touch, and just nearby, we can stroll through the art gallery with changing collections and auctions where we’ve even picked up pieces for our home.
Morning and Midday Meal Choices
Breakfast and lunch are both served in the Michelangelo dining room. It’s nice to have a relaxed place to enjoy these meals with plenty of seating. The space offers a calm setting to start the day or take a midday break while we explore other parts of the ship.
Art and Culture on the Ship
Discovering the Ship’s Art Collection
Just outside the main dining room, there’s an art gallery that we love to visit. The art changes daily, so there’s always something new to admire. We especially enjoy the conch shells; we even have a few at home from past auctions.
Walking through the gallery is a nice way to spend some time, whether or not you plan to buy anything.
Joining the Art Sales Event
The ship hosts lively art auctions where you can bid on beautiful pieces. These auctions have been a fun tradition for us, even though we don’t attend as often now. It’s exciting to see the various artworks up for sale and maybe even take something unique back home.
Evening Fun and Show Experiences
Comedy Nights at the Limelight Lounge
We love spending time at the Limelight Lounge, which transforms into a comedy club in the evenings. The seating is cozy and spacious enough for everyone. Waitstaff are attentive, taking drink orders so we can focus on enjoying the jokes and laughs.
Beverage Service and Seating Comfort
Drink service is smooth, with servers walking around to make sure everyone has what they need. The seating is comfortable, perfect for relaxing while watching shows or just hanging out. It adds a laid-back vibe to our nights onboard.
Best Advice for a Great Visit
Must-Have Items to Bring Along
We always make sure to pack sunscreen and a good hat, like a floppy one, because sun protection is key. Comfortable shoes are a must for walking around town since it’s only about a 15-20 minute stroll from the ship. Bringing a small bag for any souvenirs or snacks helps keep things easy when exploring the local shops and markets.
How to Maximize Your Time at the Port
On port days, we like to head into town early to visit shops, restaurants, and the local market in the plaza. If you prefer a quieter day, staying on the ship is perfect because it’s less crowded and you can relax by the pool or in lounge chairs under the retractable dome. Don’t miss the chance to check out the sea lions near the back of the ship—their presence really adds to the experience.
